What You Need To Know About Keratin Treatments

Keratin treatments are amazing for giving a smooth and glossy feeling to your hair, leaving it feeling soft and healthy.

But as it's a professional chemical service, there are a few things to consider before having a treatment.

A keratin treatment is designed to smooth the hair and improve manageability by temporarily changing the hair’s structure. While the results are long-lasting, having treatments too frequently can do more harm than good. Having a treatment like this too often can lead to hair being over-processed, feeling dry, heavy, and can even affect how effective future treatments can be.

The ideal time between treatments is generally 12 to 16 weeks or 3-4 months, depending on your hair type, condition and home care routine. At our treatment appointments, I will always chat to you further about this, so that we're both on the same page.

If you have darker coloured hair, I often recommend having your keratin treatment first and then any colour treatments afterwards. This is because a keratin treatment can sometimes soften or slightly fade darker artificial pigments.

Every head of hair is unique, so I will always tailor the order of services to achieve the healthiest and most beautiful result.

Of course, I would always love it if you came to Signature Hair for your keratin treatment! However, if you do end up going to another salon, please keep in mind that not all keratin treatments are created equal.

Professional keratin treatment systems are developed with carefully selected ingredients designed to smooth the hair while helping maintain condition and shine. They will be backed by research and have consistent manufacturing standards.

So opting for a lower-cost treatment may mean having a treatment that uses lower-grade ingredients and may not provide the same consistency or longevity.

My priority personally is never to offer the cheapest treatment, it will always be to work with trusted products while looking after the long-term health of your hair.

But what about after the treatment? Your at home hair care will affect how long your treatment lasts, so it's just as important.

At home, make sure you use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner (check out my personal recommendations by clicking here), protect your hair from excessive heat, and follow any aftercare advice you're given by your salon.

Intensive conditioning masks and treatments can also really help your hair. A keratin treatment is a chemical treatment after all, so any nourishing treatments for your hair will help hugely with health and shine between appointments.

I hope this has been helpful in thinking about how you can get the very best out of your next keratin treatment.
